The People Behind Canal Wall Doctor
Canal Wall Doctor is a family business built on nearly two decades of working on Queensland waterways.
Our story began with Gold Coast Barges, which Greg and Tracy purchased in 2007. What started as one barge and one operator has grown into a team of 14, with three larger barges and a fleet of punts working across South East Queensland.
The business is still family owned and operated. That part has never changed.
Where It Started
Greg grew up on a farm in North Queensland, where repairing things was often more practical than replacing them. His father taught him machinery, problem solving and the value of doing a job properly.
Tracy grew up in Brisbane, the daughter of a mechanic who instilled the same values of hard work and integrity. She also spent much of her childhood visiting Bribie Island, long before she knew it would become such an important part of her working life.
They met while teaching in Central Queensland.
Greg's father had purchased a barge in 2003, and Greg spent his school holidays learning the marine industry on the Gold Coast waterways. When his father retired in 2007, Greg and Tracy took over Gold Coast Barges and began building the business that exists today.
Why Canal Wall Doctor Exists
Canal Wall Doctor grew from something we kept seeing in our work.
Across the Gold Coast and Bribie Island, thousands of waterfront properties have canal walls that are quietly ageing. Many had never been properly inspected, and homeowners often had no idea what condition their wall was in or what maintenance it required.
There was a gap between general property inspections and the specialist knowledge, equipment and water access needed to properly assess a canal wall.
Canal Wall Doctor was created to fill that gap.
Today, we focus specifically on the inspection, maintenance and repair of residential canal walls, backed by the marine experience and resources of Gold Coast Barges.
A Family Business on the Water
Tracy manages Canal Wall Doctor day to day, overseeing scheduling, client communication, reports and the quality of the work delivered.
When a wall requires more than routine maintenance, Greg and the Gold Coast Barges team work alongside experienced engineers to assist with larger repairs and structural issues.
This connection between the two businesses means our clients have access to the equipment, marine experience and technical support required when a problem goes beyond routine maintenance.
Our Bribie Island Connection
Bribie Island has always been special to us. Tracy spent her childhood holidays around Bongaree and Woorim, and today it is where Canal Wall Doctor carries out much of its work.
Our team works across Banksia Beach and Bongaree, inspecting walls at low tide and building a detailed understanding of the local canal system.
Greg and Tracy regularly visit Bribie to oversee the team and maintain the personal service that has always been important to the business.
Our inspections are led locally by Michael McLean, who has extensive experience across the Bribie Island canal system. Every report is reviewed by Tracy before it is sent to the client.
What We've Learned
Nearly 20 years on Queensland waterways has taught us one thing above all else:
Small problems are much easier to fix than big ones.
The best wall maintenance is preventative. Regular inspections allow changes to be identified early, before they become more complicated and expensive to repair.
That's the philosophy behind everything we do at Canal Wall Doctor.
Inspect it before there's a problem. Maintain it before it becomes a repair.
Backed by Gold Coast Barges
Canal Wall Doctor is supported by the resources and marine experience of Gold Coast Barges, an established commercial marine operation working across South East Queensland.
With a team of 14, multiple commercial barges and a fleet of punts, we have the equipment and waterway experience to access and work on canal walls safely and efficiently.
Our marine operations are conducted in accordance with Australian Maritime Safety Authority requirements and are fully insured.
